Merry Christmas!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. This will be our last order of the year. We will be re opening next year in August for the fall semester.

Green Door Gourmet has added some sweet carrots this week and purple daikon radishes. Root crops are an excellent source of nutrients and enzymes- we get to eat all of the nutrition that the plant has stored to feed itself. Green Door still has several different kinds of greens available.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your strong support of the South Cumberland Food Hub this year. All of our farmers thank you for opening this opportunity for them to grow their businesses. Thank you for your patience when we are out of something you ordered. Ordering locally has its challenges and we appreciate your willingness to face those challenges. This proves that your convictions about buying local go deeper than convenience and price. We wish every one of you a super Merry Christmas and may the Blessings of God rest upon you, your family and your businesses.

Seeya next year!

End of Year

Hello Everyone. We are coming to the close of our operations for the year. The hub will be closed today and we will reopen Monday, Dec.8th for the last order of the year. We are planning to re open next August for operations during the fall and early winter.

Let me know if you have any questions about our plans for next year, or any suggestions as to how we can improve our service to you. Thank you and have a wonderful week!
See you next Monday :-)

Time to Order Local Food!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. I trust that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Our family sure did and we enjoyed it even more knowing that some of our food came from our local farmer friends.

The market is back open this week and we still have a great deal to choose from. Crow Mountain Orchard still has apples and they will probably last another couple of weeks or so.

The South Cumberland Food Hub will be open for the first 2 weeks of December and then we will shut down until after the first. We may re open with limited deliveries after that until we resume our full operations in late August. I will keep you all posted as to what we decide to do. Thank you and have a great day!

Thanksgiving

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. My favorite holiday is almost here! I like to remember that our early ancestors set aside this day to show their thanks for the simple things in life- food, shelter, friendship and freedom. During this holiday think about the things you are thankful for and focus on how Blessed we are to have the simple things. Many people around the world don’t have any of the things I mentioned above. Despite certain things, it is still good to be an American.

We will be closed for the holiday and will re open the week of Dec.1st. I hope everyone has a super Thanksgiving and gets to enjoy it with your loved ones.

Local food is big business and more and more restaurants, stores and schools are getting involved. We are in the middle of a movement that is changing the way America eats and it is very exciting. Here’s a great article to show what is happening in our area, as well as all over the United States.

Thank you all for supporting your local farmers and artisans this past 2 years and we look forward to our continued service to you and our local growers and producers. See you on the 1st!

Time to Order Local Food!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub.

Green Door Gourmet is out of green kale this week, but it should be back next week or the week after- it needs some time to grow back. Plants grow slowly during this time of year with the cooler temperatures and less daylight. They still have plenty of red russian kale though, as well as several other types of greens.

This is prime cold and flu season (it’s making the rounds in my family now) so load up on local garlic from Solace Farm. It can be used daily as a preventative.

Local Food!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. It’s a great day with plenty of sunshine. Enjoy it while it lasts since the cold weather will be moving in towards the end of the week.

Green Door Gourmet picked all of their peppers before the last frost since the plants were wiped out. Their supply will not last too much longer so make plans to order now and chop and freeze for later dishes.

Crow Mountain Orchard encountered a hail storm a couple of weeks ago which wiped out their Fuji crop and hurt their Pink Lady harvest too. They should have apples thru December this year despite these setbacks.

Good morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. Looks like the first freeze of the year has arrived and most likely finished out any summer crops that were still hanging on for some farmers. It’s good news for the fall crops though, makes everything taste better.

We have greens in abundance and winter squashes, garlic and much more this week. Check out the whole list here:

Time to Order Local Food!

Good Morning from the South Cumberland Food Hub. The weather is definitely telling us fall is here, and our first heavy frost is coming quickly. This means we will say goodbye to most of summer’s bounty and look forward to the cold “sweetening up” our fall greens and cabbages.

Keel Produce Farm has collard greens in abundance- this is a very nutritional green, high in folate. He also has white turnips that are very nicely flavored with a bit of sweetness to them. I had a piece of raw turnip yesterday from a white turnip about the size of a softball and was surprised at how delicate and flavorful it was. They obviously taste great even when they’re big.

Check out the rest of our produce including garlic and herbs such as cilantro. This is an excellent time to get fresh herbs that like cool weather- they are at their best now.
